It’s been a long time between flips at Matakana Island for us thats for sure. But finally the stars aligned and we took the opportunity to organise a trip down the line to catch up with our east coast buddies from Tauranga and the Mount. The report wasn’t the best surf wise, little to none was the overwhelming theme, but with sunshine forecast nothing was going to deter us from enjoying some long overdue Island time.
We hit the road and ended up down at the base of Mount Maunganui around lunch. Pilot Bay is by far the best choice of ramp to launch from given the close proximity to the Island – only a short 10min rider over so we maximise the time spent shredding on a tank of Gull Force10. After we got the handshakes out of the way with the local lads we hit the water and headed over.
The island was looking near magical in the spring sun and we soon settled in on its sandy shores. The weather was absolutely mint!! There was the occasional 2ft wave rolling in every now and then too. So all was not lost and we were able to get our flip on. After shredding some small sets, chewing the fat, and soaking in the rays it was time to go and we headed back. Another classic Matakana mission that didn’t disappoint.
Cheers to Gull for fuelling our mission. Next stop… Cronulla, Sydney for the final Rip’n Ride event. Watch out Australia!!
